Can Pre-Employment Exams Save Lives? As a Nurse, I Say Yes!

by | May 25, 2018 | Employee Health Management, Occupational Health Management, Pre Employment Testing, Workplace Safety

Earlier in my career working in an emergency department, I learned to expect the unexpected.  In fact, I thrived in chaos and welcomed the opportunity to be a part of a team that helped save the lives of those in need.  But when it comes to occupational health, the focus lies in prevention; preventing unnecessary tragedies from occurring which impact not only the employee, but their families and employer.

A Day a Nurse Never Forgets

While working my shift one day, we received a call from EMS notifying us of a transport that would soon be arriving in the emergency department.  It involved a 27 year old male patient who had been injured while working.  The employer had limited information about the victim and explained the employee had only been working there for three weeks with that day being the first he was working independently.

What the employer did not know was that the employee suffered from a medical problem that at times would cause him to become disoriented, which was likely what caused his accident.

Despite live saving efforts, the employee did not survive the accident.

To this day, I will never forget the tears in his spouse’s eyes, holding their young toddlers, as we had to notify her of his demise.

Pre-Employment Testing Saves Lives

Kelli Billings, Occupational Health Program Client Liaison, explains “Pre-employment testing helps to ensure your new employees are healthy, fit and safe to do the job they were hired for. This in turn helps to protect not only the new employee but the existing population as well.”

Had the employer implemented a pre-employment testing program that would have identified the medical condition which placed him at risk of potential injury, I truly believe that tragedy could have been prevented.
